Southern Cross-Island Highway Yakou & Daguanshan Tunnel Portal, Guanshan / Haiduan Township, Taitung County, Taiwan. Standing at 2,722 meters above sea level, Yakou at the eastern mouth of Daguanshan Tunnel is the highest point along the Southern Cross-Island Highway. Here, travelers emerge from the narrow rock tunnel into a wonderland of majestic alpine peaks, ancient hemlock fir forests, and cascading waterfalls of white clouds pouring across the Central Mountain Range. After descending to Guanshan town, visitors replenish their energy with classic Guanshan wooden lunchboxes, crispy Guanshan stinky tofu, and sweet handmade peanut candy.
